Having a large payroll in Major League Baseball means a team will have more stars and they will have more depth than other teams. But it doesn't guarantee a team will make the playoffs.
Below is a look at the opening day payrolls of the 15 teams that currently have winning records. This year, the average payroll was $94.9 million and yet, the two teams with the best record in baseball (Washington Nationals, Cincinnati Reds) each have payrolls below that level.
In fact, seven of the 15 teams had an opening day payroll below average. Meanwhile, teams like the Philadelphia Phillies and Boston Red Sox have payrolls north of $170 million to go along with their losing records...
